Inga edulis

EISCREME-BOHNE

Englische Bezeichnung: Ice Cream Bean
Spanische Bezeichnung: Guama

Familie

Family

Legume family (Fabaceae)

This is a plant species of the Inga genus. It is cultivated for its large edible pods and for its contribution to nitrogen-fixing crop rotation. Its pod is also called guama.  The common name „ice bean“ alludes to the sweet taste and smooth texture of the pulp.
The pulp can be eaten straight out of the pods or made into sweet desserts.
Inga Edulis trees improve soil quality and prevent erosion.

(Soil improver: The waste contains a lot of nitrogen, lignins and polyphenols. It decomposes slowly but provides a long-term build-up of organic nitrogen and effective weed control. Weed biomass decreased significantly in all agroforestry trials, much more than with other legumes).

Familia
