Die Araucaria heterophylla, auch Norfolktanne genannt, ist eine immergrüne Konifere aus der Familie der Araukariengewächse (Araucariaceae). Ursprünglich stammt sie von Norfolk Island, einer kleinen Insel im Pazifik zwischen Neuseeland und Neukaledonien. Trotz ihres Namens ist sie keine echte Tanne, sondern ein sogenannter „lebendes Fossil“ – ihre Vorfahren existierten bereits vor über 200 Millionen Jahren zur Zeit der Dinosaurier.

In der Natur kann die Araucaria bis zu 60 Meter hoch werden, mit einem streng pyramidenförmigen Wuchs und waagerecht ausgebreiteten Ästen. In Zimmerkultur bleibt sie jedoch deutlich kleiner und wächst langsam, was sie als dekoratives Wohn- und Büropflanze beliebt macht. Charakteristisch sind ihre weichen, nadelartigen Blätter und die symmetrische Wuchsform, die fast künstlich wirkt.

Interessant: Früher nutzten Seefahrer die gerade, widerstandsfähige Holzstruktur der Araucaria für Schiffsmasten. Heute wird sie besonders als Zimmerbaum oder auch als „lebender Weihnachtsbaum“ geschätzt, da sie robust, langlebig und vergleichsweise pflegeleicht ist.

Araucaria heterophylla, also known as Norfolk Island pine, is an evergreen conifer belonging to the Araucariaceae family. It originates from Norfolk Island, a small island in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and New Caledonia. Despite its name, it is not a true fir, but a so-called ‘living fossil’ – its ancestors existed over 200 million years ago during the time of the dinosaurs.

In nature, the Araucaria can grow up to 60 metres tall, with a strictly pyramidal growth habit and horizontally spreading branches. However, when grown indoors, it remains significantly smaller and grows slowly, making it a popular decorative plant for homes and offices. Its soft, needle-like leaves and symmetrical growth habit, which appears almost artificial, are characteristic features.

Interesting fact: sailors used to use the straight, sturdy wood of the araucaria for ship masts. Today, it is particularly valued as an indoor tree or ‘living Christmas tree’ because it is robust, durable and relatively easy to care for.

La Araucaria heterophylla, también conocida como abeto de Norfolk, es una conífera de hoja perenne perteneciente a la familia Araucariaceae. Es originaria de la isla Norfolk, una pequeña isla situada en el Pacífico entre Nueva Zelanda y Nueva Caledonia. A pesar de su nombre, no es un abeto auténtico, sino un «fósil viviente»: sus antepasados ya existían hace más de 200 millones de años, en la época de los dinosaurios.

En la naturaleza, la araucaria puede alcanzar hasta 60 metros de altura, con un crecimiento estrictamente piramidal y ramas extendidas horizontalmente. Sin embargo, en cultivo de interior se mantiene mucho más pequeña y crece lentamente, lo que la hace muy popular como planta decorativa para el hogar y la oficina. Son características sus hojas suaves en forma de aguja y su forma de crecimiento simétrica, que parece casi artificial.

Dato interesante: antiguamente, los marineros utilizaban la estructura recta y resistente de la madera de la araucaria para fabricar mástiles de barco. Hoy en día se aprecia especialmente como planta de interior o como «árbol de Navidad vivo», ya que es robusta, duradera y relativamente fácil de cuidar.
